Pegboard and Pegs

Are you searching for the perfect gift for a toddler or preschooler? If you want to make a big hit with both the child and parents, consider an educational toy such as a jumbo sized pegboard and pegs. This toy is standard in most educational settings and until I studied early childhood development I didn’t understand why. To me it seemed like a mundane toy and not very fun or exciting. There are no flashing lights or sounds and no cartoon characters, but what a pegboard with pegs has is an opportunity to challenge a child in his development. A peg and pegboard set that has toddler sized pegs is the right size for a little one’s hands. She can grasp the pieces and place them into the holes. This is great for fine motor control and eye hand coordination. As the toddler’s skills develop he will be able to quickly and successfully place and remove the pegs. This seems like a simple task but watch how hard a baby will work to first grasp an item and then put it in the right place. Also note the satisfaction and excitement the child has with each success. A preschooler will practice different skills with a pegboard and pegs. The colorful pegs will help with color recognition. She will begin to make patterns and sequences with the pegs. He may use the pegs to learn to count. With encouragement she will become aware of simple adding and subtraction. This toy is also brilliant for language development; the little one will learn the words for different positions such as beside, behind, under and on top of. The pegs can be used on their own for sorting and matching. These are all early concepts that provide the foundation for further learning.
