Best travel toys for toddlers

So you are planning a vacation with your toddler. Perhaps your family is going to a cabin, or grandma’s or even a cruise. You have limited luggage space but want to bring toys that will keep your toddler entertained. The ideal toys would be versatile; they can be used in many ways. They need to be compact and easily transported. They have to be sturdy and fun and amusing.
For the plane or car ride I would suggest providing a surprise bag of little treats. This could include tiny books, a sticker book, finger puppets, zip lock bags of special snacks and maybe a miniature etch a sketch. A small construction sets for toddlers such as one with magnetic pieces is great, as long as there aren’t too many small parts. These items need not be expensive, just novel.

At your destination, pegs and pegboards for toddlers are a good bet. The oversized pegs are difficult to lose and good quality sets are durable and travel well. The pegs can be used for sorting, stacking, matching and constructing. Add some lacing cord and the pegs can be strung together. I have seen toddlers and preschoolers use the pegs in pretend play with dishes, beach toys and cars and trucks. Pegs and pegboards for toddlers that come with their own backpack are ideal for travelling.

A great travel toy is an activity cube for toddlers that is collapsible and compact. An activity cube that integrates shape sorting, peg boards, puzzle pieces and counting games provides endless opportunities for learning and entertainment. A good example of this is the Skoolzy activity cube for toddlers. It includes 6 foam mats that interlock as a puzzle or build into a cube and a variety of colored and geometric shaped pegs. Each puzzle piece can be used as an individual activity. The backpack keeps the pieces contained.

Construction toys for toddlers are entertaining to build and then are great for pretend play. Be sure to select a set that doesn’t have a multitude of tiny pieces. Sets with wheels increase opportunities for play. Add some plastic animals or dinosaurs and your toddler will be kept busy.

These toys all have many advantages for travel. There are no batteries. There are no flashing lights or sounds, so they are not distracting to others. The toys can be played with independently or with friends. And they can be used in many settings. With a little planning and preparation, your toddler will be entertained and your whole family will have a wonderful vacation. Enjoy!

Pegboard and Pegs

Are you searching for the perfect gift for a toddler or preschooler? If you want to make a big hit with both the child and parents, consider an educational toy such as a jumbo sized pegboard and pegs . This toy is standard in most educational settings and until I studied early childhood development I didn’t understand why. To me it seemed like a mundane toy and not very fun or exciting.
